From Desolation Comes Life
Nutrex Hawaii’s parent company Cyanotech’s 90-acre farm is situated on Hawaii island’s picturesque Kona Coast. Our microalgae farm was once an infertile lava flow. To make best use of available resources, we reclaimed that inhospitable land, and repurposed it to grow some of the most nutritious foods on the planet.
Spirulina Is Sustainable
When it comes to sustainability, not all crops are created equally. For example, livestock production is extremely resource intensive. Spirulina produces 20 times more protein per acre than beef, and it uses only a tenth of the water. Being green isn’t just about using fewer resources; it’s about making the most out of the resources you use. And spirulina is extremely efficient in this regard.
Photosynthesis = Oxygen
When you think of industrial byproducts, clean, breathable air might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Well, you’ll be happy to know that oxygen is the chief byproduct of our microalgae production system.
We Recycle – Even the Water
These days, most companies have a recycling program designed to eliminate paper, plastic, and glass waste. At Nutrex Hawaii, we take our recycling program a step further. The water we use to fill our growing ponds is sourced from Hawaii Island’s pure natural aquifer. That way, you can rest assured that your spirulina is some of the purest you’ll find anywhere. We recycle water from our aquaculture systems and are researching additional reclamation projects.
Hawaii’s climate is generally pretty mild, but sometimes it gets really hot. Sweating is fine when you’re at the beach or working under a blazing sun, but when you’re at the office, you want to stay cool. Rather than install a bunch of AC units, we’ve figured out a way to cool our office buildings with cold water pumped up from the deep ocean. We also use it in our spirulina drying system.

Like many people in Hawaii, we’ve gone solar by installing 2,230 solar panals. These panels take up 1.3 acres of land and offest 791 metric tons of greenhouse emissions per year - equal to 167 passenger vechicles per year. Most of the electricity in Hawaii is generated with oil, and that oil has to be shipped in. As a result, electricity is expensive here, but sunshine has always been plentiful and free. And as an added bonus, it makes our sustainable business model even greener.
