It started in 1984. Our microalgae farm is carved out of 96 acres of lava from a 300-year-old lava flow from the Hualalai volcano. It’s fed by bright natural Hawaiian sunlight, clean crisp air, and lava-filtered Hawaiian aquifer water. —And for over 35 years, we have been putting it all in a bottle. This healthy environment supports a healthy farm, healthy microalgae and a healthy you! Because it matters where it’s grown.
Our microalgae are grown with craft and science on our Kona Coast farm—allowing us to ensure consistency and high quality. It’s a special place for a farm and a lot of it is in every bottle. We cultivate and harvest two types of microalga, Arthrospira platensis, a.k.a Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica®, and Haematococcus pluvialis, the green microalgae that produces BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin®. Both of which provide healthful benefits for our customers.
Our mission: Fulfilling the promise of WHOLE HEALTH through Hawaiian microalgae. This is why we chose to farm spirulina and Haematococcus algae. Our founder and Chief Science Officer, Gerry Cysewski, was confident he could create a high-quality farming environment to produce superior products under carefully controlled conditions.
Farming Spirulina
Spirulina is one of the most nutritious, whole food supplements known to humankind. In fact, one 3 gram serving of Hawaiian Spirulina provides 60-70% protein by weight and is an excellent source of vitamins A, K1, K2, B12, and iron. It’s also a source of health-giving phytonutrients such as carotenoids, GLA, SOD, and phycocyanin. Spirulina is a “whole algae” and once harvested from the ponds, it is then dried with our custom Ocean Chill Drying technology. Our Hawaiian Spirulina powder is harvested and processed for bottling in about 30 minutes which preserves its high nutritional content. We use lava-filtered Hawaiian aquifer water to grow our algae, which is so pure it’s qualified as drinking water, a growing medium unique to our farm. We are the only microalgae producer to use lava filtered Hawaiian aquifer water to grow our algae, other farms use river or irrigation water. We also add a small amount of deep ocean water to add trace minerals. The deep ocean water is sourced from more than 2,000 feet below the surface. By harvesting the benefits of our Hawaiian Spirulina® microalgae, we aim to support our customer’s immunity, energy & cardiovascular health*.
Farming Haematococcus
Grown on the world’s most vertically integrated microalgae algae farm and on the sunniest coast in America, we are one of the few astaxanthin producers that grows its microalgae in outdoor raceway ponds. These culture ponds are shaped like an oval racetrack where the water moves around the oval by a gentle paddle wheel to ensure all the algae is exposed to the natural Hawaiian sun to undergo photosynthesis and reproduce naturally. When the algae are ready for harvest, it is dried, and the cells cracked before we extract the astaxanthin from the algae. We operate one of the highest-pressure CO2 extraction systems in the world to extract Hawaiian Astaxanthin from our microalgae. This solvent free extraction process is vital to providing high quality astaxanthin. Because it matters where and how it’s grown.
Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant classified as a carotenoid, which includes organic pigments found in a variety of species of plants, algae, animals, bacteria and fungi. At its essence, astaxanthin serves as one of the most powerful antioxidants that can be absorbed by the human body. It is beneficial in relieving oxidative stress throughout the body, while also aiding in recovery time following exercise.* It also provides support for healthy skin, and most of the staff who work in the production of astaxanthin regularly take BioAstin to protect themselves from the intense Hawaiian sun on our farm*.
